Size 3 From Takahiro Miyashita's 2003 Number (N)ine collection, Touch Me I'm Sick, these jeans take their cue from Kurt Cobain's patched denim. Dark velvet patches sit across the thighs and along the inner legs, breaking up the faded blue denim. Large frayed openings at the knees expose pale threads, while the contrast stitching and five-pocket construction preserve the familiar shape of a pair of jeans. The collection drew on Cobain and the clothes of the grunge scene, treating wear, repair and personal attachment as part of the design. Here, the velvet is the telling detail: its soft, dense surface sits against denim that looks worn thin. Music-note pocket lining adds another small reference inside the garment.
